Presidential governments often lead to the disempowerment of the parliament because the president holds significant executive power, which can overshadow the role of the legislative branch. In a presidential system, the president is directly elected by the people and has a strong mandate to govern, while members of parliament may feel less influential or marginalized in comparison. Additionally, the separation of powers in a presidential system can create tensions between the executive and legislative branches, leading to gridlock and difficulty in passing legislation. **

The disempowerment of national governments by the EU Parliament can be seen as both a democratic and undemocratic process. On one hand, it can be argued that the EU Parliament, as a directly elected body, represents the democratic will of the European citizens and therefore its actions can be seen as a reflection of democratic principles. However, the disempowerment of national governments can also be seen as undemocratic, as it may undermine the sovereignty and decision-making power of individual member states. The balance between the EU Parliament's authority and the sovereignty of national governments is a complex issue that continues to be debated within the EU. **
